Being an aerobic exercise, running effectively develops cardiovascular endurance, the most important component of overall fitness. Running develops the heart’s capacity to deliver oxygenated blood to the working muscles and simultaneously improve their capacity to use this oxygen. Running use all the major muscles in your legs, which comprise about four times the muscle mass of your arms. When these muscles work they require oxygen from the blood, which makes your heart pump faster to deliver that blood.

Like any other muscle the heart becomes stronger in response to having to work harder, and the more powerful your heart the more blood it pumps per beat: consequently , the less often it has to pump to deliver the necessary blood to your muscles. Many benefits are attributed to regular aerobic exercise. The most important result is reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of mortality these days.

Regular exercise increases the pumping capacity of the heart and possibly the diameter of the coronary arteries, while also lowering the blood concentrations of triglycerides and low density lipoproteins, or LDLs, the “bad” cholesterol that can cause plaque to accumulate on the walls of arteries. Regular exercise also appears to raise the level of high-density lipoproteins, the “good” HDLs, which carry cholesterol to the liver to be broken down.

Among the other benefits associated with aerobic exercise are a reduction in the risks of osteop
